Embu Catholic Bishop warns against evictions from scheme land
The Bishop
Catholic Diocese of Embu Paul Kariuki has warned the Government against
evicting residents who live in the controversial Mwea settlement scheme in Mbeere
South Sub-County.
Rev Kariuki
faulted the Embu County Government for rushing to erect beacons before solving
the problems surrounding the subdivision of that land.
He observed
that some of residents had resided at the scheme for over 40 years and were
complaining that they were left out of demarcation and allocation of land
parcels.
He
advised the government to review the process and start it afresh so that
all people are considered.
The bishop
warned that the church will not watch in silence as the people are deprived off
rights to the land where they have lived for decades.
He
called more consultations among the various stakeholders to find an amicable
solution to the impasse surrounding the land.
Erections
of beacons started last week and is expected to end today.
The government
finalised surveying and issuing of 7,232 title deeds in 2016 but a section of
residents have opposed the process calling for its repeat in a more transparent
and fair manner.
Government
officials led by Lands CEC Josphat Kithumbu said the process was done in
accordance with the law, and it is final.
