Embu MCAs’ violent confrontation disrupt youth forum
A consultative forum between Embu County youth and
various leaders turned chaotic after two Ward Representatives angrily clashed and
threatened to engage in a fistfight.
Deputy Speaker Steve Simba and Nominated MCA Edna
Muisyo went for each other’s throats after Simba alleged that Muisyo had
secretly drafted a Motion to impeach him from the Deputy Speaker’s position. He
said this was an affront to the quest for youth empowerment since the Deputy
Speakership is the highest post held by a youthful leader at the Assembly.
Muisyo, on the other hand, urged Simba not to wash
the Assembly’s dirty linen in public and stick to youth affairs. She maintained
that MCAs ought to differentiate between county legislative affairs and any
other public business to avoid mixing the two and exposing the County Assembly
to undue public ridicule.
Efforts by senior county officials to physically separate
the two, who were breathing down each other’s necks bore no fruit as they both
secured a microphone each to shout one another down. Pandemonium reined as the
two leaders shoved each other severally in an effort to silence one another
display their dominance.
Simba swore to face
anyone plotting his impeachment and defend his position as Deputy Speaker by
all means in his disposal, while Muisyo sought to dispel rumours that she was
the author of the Motion to dethrone Simba.
The two were addressing a gathering of more than 200
youth leaders dubbed “the State of the Youth Forum” which was held at the
County Assembly debate chambers. The forum brought together youthful MCAs,
members of the County Cabinet and representatives from different youth groups.
After a bitter verbal exchange, opposing factions of
the youth who were gathered at the Assembly chambers started chanting in
support of different leaders, climbed on the seats and hurled insults at each
other. One group challenged Simba to lead by example and show respect for women
instead of violently attacking them, while the other opposed the planned
Simba’s ouster and called for upholding of youth rights.
It took the efforts of Sergeant-at-Arms John Mbogo
to quell the disorder that was threatening to get out of hand. The Sergeant
vowed to handcuff any individual who would breach the order at the County
Assembly precincts and frogmarch them to the nearest police station for causing
disturbance.
After sanity was restored, Finance and Economic
Planning Chief Officer Pastor John Mukundi Zachary closed the meeting with a
prayer for peace amongst the Members of the County Assembly, after which the
leaders were quickly whisked out of the chambers to avert further
confrontations.
