Embu: Woman Rep to sponsor motion to declare cancer a national disaster
Embu
woman representative Jane Wanjuki will sponsor a motion in the National
Assembly to declare cancer a national disaster.
Wanjuki
plans to compel the Government through the Ministry of Health to meet the cost
of screening for cancer and treatment for Kenyans diagnosed with the disease.
Speaking
during a medical camp at ACK Kigari Church in Embu North sub-county, Wanjuki
said only a few Kenyans can afford the treatment for the killer disease whereas
cancer can affect anyone.
Wanjuki
said the disease had become a burden to many afflicted families where even the National
Hospital Insurance Fund cover was insufficient to meet the cost of treatment.
She said
the government should meet cancer treatment cost the same way it intervenes to
rescue Kenyans in case of catastrophes such as floods and droughts
National
Council for Population and Development Director General Dr Josphine Mbae urged
Kenyans to embrace regular screening, which would enable early diagnosis when
the disease is treatable.
She said
currently, mainly women turned up for free screening at medical camps whereas
even men were at risk of various forms of cancer.
During the
free medical camp organised by Women for Cancer group and other partners, hundreds
of residents were screened for cancer, high blood pressure, checked weight and
given nutritional advice, among others.
