Five AP officers jailed for murder of Mbeere miraa farmer
Five AP officers have been sentences to 10 and five year
jail terms after they were found guilty of murdering a miraa farmer during a
crackdown in 2014.
Two senior Administration Police officers, Inspector Peter
Musau Maweu and Sergeant Jonathan Nzivo, were jailed for 10 years each while recruits
John Nabea, Benard Engolet and Sammy Mwova were sentenced to five years
imprisonment each.
They were all accused of the murder of Danson Wachira who died
after being bludgeoned on the head during a raid at a bar in at Umau village,
Mbeere South constituency on January 11, 2014.
Lady Justice Florence Muchemi noted that the accused were
charged with ensuring the wellbeing of the suspects they arrested.
The accused had denied killing the deceased during an
operation to arrest revellers drinking beyond allowed hours.
They were accused of beating him up and bundling him in a
vehicle for transportation to Kiritiri police station for arraignment.
At the station, officers manning the booking desk declined
to book Nyaga and advised that the officers take him to hospital as he appeared
unwell.
The officers are said to have abandoned him three kilometres
from the police station where the decomposing body was found.
The hearing lasted four years while a warrant of arrest was
issued for the three recruits after they failed to appear in court.
In her ruling, the judge said the prosecution led by Brenda
Nandwa had linked the police to the death of the farmer.
The
two senior AP officers were out of a Sh500,000 and were based at Kiritiri
police station.
