A middle-aged man has been buried alive while digging a pit
latrine at Gichugu Primary school in Embu County after the earth caved in.
The victim James Kinyua was digging together with his
brother Paul Savania and they had reached 34 feet when the accident happened on
Tuesday.
Savania says he worked his shift inside the hole from 7.30
until 12.30 when they left for lunch.
“In the afternoon Kinyua was digging when the hole just
collapsed when we had just met that day’s target. I screamed to alert the
people,” he said adding that work started on Tuesday last week.
He said they had been working together since year 2000 and
could dig a 30ft toilet in just four days, but even with their experience they
had not seen signs of collapse.
They had been contracted to dig the latrine, which is funded
National Government Constituency Development Fund.
Gaturi North location chief Nicasio Nyaga said the 3pm
incident attracted tens of resident who used spades and their hands to dig soil
to no avail.
They sought the help of SS Meta Contractor excavator, which
are working on a nearby road.
As of yesterday, volunteers were rushing against time to dig
up the hole and rescue him and had covered 29 ft.
Embu North OCPD Godfrey Kere said they had deployed officers
to assist in rescue efforts.
He said they could not rule out landslides especially since
the rains had been pounding the area recently.
