Muturi urged to vie for presidency not as Ruto’s deputy in 2022

Speaker of the National Assembly Justin Muturi has been advised to vie for the presidency in 2022 instead of waiting to be picked as Deputy President William Ruto’s running mate.

Former Transport Permanent Secretary Dr Cyrus Njiru said Muturi had what it takes to win the country’s big seat and should not go for a lower seat, as a section of MPs from Embu and neighbouring counties have been lobbying for.

Dr Njiru who was a gubernatorial candidate in Embu in the last general election cited Muturi’s extensive experience in leadership as an elected MP for Siakago constituency for two terms, as a speaker for two terms in addition to his training in law and having worked as a magistrate.

“As a speaker, Muturi is well known all over Kenya and has more experience than some of the people eyeing the presidency seat. Why should he settle for anything less? I’m ready to campaign for him all over Kenya and if need be I can shelve my political ambitions for his,” said Dr Njiru.

He said time was ripe for small Kenyan communities, such as the Mbeere, to produce a president and called on the Kikuyu, Kalenjin and other communities to support Muturi.

Muturi hails from the Mbeere community of Embu County.

Nominated MP Cecily Mbarire and other legislators from Embu have been urging Ruto to pick Muturi as his running mate and in return they would support his (Ruto’s) stab for the presidency.

During a church attended by Ruto and Muturi at Kigari ACK last month, Embu Senator Njeru Ndwiga, Woman Representative Jane Wanjuki, MPs John Muchiri (Manyatta), Muriuki Njajagua (Mbeere North) Eric Muchangi (Runyenjes) and Mbarire said they would mobilise their constituents to support Ruto and Muturi for the presidency.

“We (Embu) have been very good supporters of successive governments, but because we are few (population) we have been unable to take senior positions in government. Thus, we request Ruto to seriously consider our request. We tell the Mt Kenya MPs that this time round the DP must come from Embu,” said Ms Mbarire.

Muchangi who is a member of the Akorino faith made a prophesy of Ruto being the next president, but called for Muturi as the DP because “he has the brains and the experience”.

Njagagua said Ruto and Muturi would form a formidable team of development conscious leaders who would easily sail through in the presidential race.

The lobbying received more support from MPs George Gitonga (Tharaka), Gichuhi Mwangi (Tetu), Gabriel Kago (Githunguri), Alice Wahome (Kandara) Kimani Ichung’wa (Kikuyu) and East African Legislative Assembly MP Mpuri Aburi.

In response Ruto said, “to promote Muturi, we will plan it together with you”.
