MCAs challenge Wambora to benchmark with Kakamega on stadium construction
Runyenjes Central MCA Steve Simba |
Embu MCAs have challenged Governor Martin Wambora to
consult his Kakamega counterpart Wycliffe Oparanya on effective stadia
construction techniques.
The MCAs who spoke after touring
Bukhungu Stadium in Kakamega County to see what a well-constructed sports arena
should look like, in a bid to salvage the stalled Embu Moi Stadium said Wambora
had a lot to learn from Oparanya in terms of quality construction, utilisation
of funds and timely delivery.
Runyenjes Central MCA Steve Simba also proposed that
all 33 Embu Ward Reps pay a courtesy call onthe Kakamega Governor after the 5th
Devolution Conference to try and understand how he has managed to upgrade the iconic
stadium in a short time, while Embu is still struggling to pump funds into a
white elephant.
He said the speed at which the Bukhungu stadium was
build, plus the quality of construction was a dream that seemed unattainable in
Embu County and urged for consultative dialogue after the benchmarking visit to
ensure Moi Stadium is completed without consuming more money from public
coffers.
Simba stated that it was untenable to factor funds
totalling to more than Ksh 200 Million in the county budget for six consecutive
years, yet the result was not visible on the grounds. He said the project was
now becoming an uncomfortable thorn in the flesh of Embu’s leadership.
The former Deputy Speaker regretted that youth in
Kirimari Ward had been relegated to engaging in sports in poor playgrounds due
to the six-year closure of the Municipal Stadium which has been their main
centre for competitive games and training in Embu town.
Simba offered to personally engage Governor Oparanya
on behalf of the Embu County Government for the sake of unlocking what he
termed as technical the deadlock causing the stalling of construction of the
Embu Stadium.
The Embu Moi Stadium has been at the centre of
controversy since the year 2014 after MCAs blew the whistle over violation of
tendering procedures in awarding of its renovation contract to a local
contractor. The charges were upheld by the Senate in Governor Wambora’s twin
impeachments.
