Embu First Lady Theresia Wambora has advised
men that they have a role to play in preparing their daughters for the arrival
of menstruation and its management.
Ms Wambora said as a departure from the
past when only women bought pads, men today should buy sanitary towels for
their wives and daughters with no shame attached to it.
The First Lady, in a speech read on her
behalf by nominated MCA Rose Kinyua during World Menstrual Hygiene Management
Day celebrations at Kairuri stadium, urged parents to discuss menstruation at
home so that girls can be well informed about the changes that happen in their
bodies.
She told parents not to abdicate the duty
of preparing their daughter to menses to teachers alone, noting that breaking
the silence on menstruation management should form part of the discourse at
home, school, church and other public forums.
“Parents should strive to prepare their
daughters for the arrival of menses by showing them that it is a normal stage
in life. They should ensure the girl has adequate pads, practices proper
hygiene and eats iron-rich diet to replenish the iron lost through
menstruation. Boys should also be counselled on whats happening to their
sister,” she said.
Ms Wambora said the county department of
gender was issuing pads to vulnerable girls in some schools who could not
access pads and either have drop out of school during their menses or use
unsafe means.
“Teachers should also be attentive to help
girls on menses during school time. They should help break silence on
menstruation at classroom and teach the girls the changes happening in their
bodies,” she said
She, however, cautioned against neglecting
boys as all the attention is channeled towards girls, saying during issuance of
pads to girls boys should also be given a token and counselling.
During the celebrations, Kairuri primary
school pupils performed a play on
breaking silence on menstruation while Catholic Diocese of Embu development
arm-Caritas provided health workers who offered counselling and health
education to students.
