A ward rep has advised the Embu County Government executive
to privatise garbage collection to improve overall cleanliness of towns and
estates.
Kirimari ward MCA Morris Collo Nyaga said most of the county
garbage vehicles had stalled and there were heaps of garbage in Embu town and
several estates leading to an outcry by the business community who feel the
county administration has failed in its mandate to keep the environment towns
clean.
Speaking in Embu town during a clean up exercise sponsored
by Tenrikyo Mission as it marked its 20th anniversary, Nyaga
told the county government to give tenders to unemployed youths who will be
entrusted with cleaning towns.
“The County Government
should come up with proper waste management methods. It should provide
customised garbage collection trucks with covered refuse compartments to avoid
littering when transporting refuse to dumpsites. More dust bins should be
provided along the streets and in estates,” he said.
He said customised trucks will rid residents of the nuisance
of spillage of garbage and choking fumes wherever the truck passes through, and
also dignify the lives and jobs of the county personnel involved in garbage
collection by providing sitting cabins.
Public health officer Rosalyn Kaugi acknowledged that the
county has been facing challenges in garbage collection especially during this
rainy season where most of county vehicles have stalled.
Kaugi said that the public health department has taken the
role of cleaning the town and the department will partner with other corporates
in ensuring that the town will have a conducive environment for the residents.
James Kariuki from Tenrikyo Mission said that they were
marking 20th anniversary in Embu and also celebrating Hinokishin
Day where the society collaborate with business community and learning institutions
in cleaning up the environment.
